Is an Online Degree Valid in India? How to Check It Yourself
Recognition is decided by regulators and by whoever you present the qualification to — never by an institution's own marketing. Rather than tell you the answer for a programme we have not verified, this page shows you exactly how to confirm it at source.
Five steps, in this order.
Each step narrows the question. Skipping straight to the last one is how families end up relying on an answer that was never checked.
- Step 01
Confirm the institution's own recognition status
Start with the regulator responsible for higher education institutions in India, the University Grants Commission. Check that the institution appears in its official lists, and note the exact name it is listed under — marketing names and legal names often differ.
- Step 02
Confirm approval for that specific programme in that specific mode
Approval is granted programme by programme and mode by mode. An institution approved to run a programme on campus is not automatically approved to run it online or in distance mode. Look for the programme, the level and the mode named together, and note the academic session the approval covers.

Check the professional or statutory body if the field has one
Fields such as medicine, pharmacy, nursing, law, architecture, engineering and teacher education have their own councils, and registration or practice rights follow that council's rules rather than the university's. If your intended career requires registration, confirm the position with that council before you enrol.

Check what your specific next step requires
A postgraduate admission office, a public-service recruitment notice or an overseas credential evaluator each sets its own conditions. If your plan depends on one of these accepting the qualification, ask that body directly and keep the answer in writing.

Keep the evidence, dated
Save the page, the list entry and the date you checked. Approvals are granted for defined periods and can change between sessions, so a screenshot with a date is worth more than a recollection.
Four things that are commonly mistaken for verification.
An institution being well known, large or long-established says nothing about whether one specific programme is approved in one specific mode.
A claim of approval on an institution's own website, brochure or counsellor call is not verification. The regulator's own listing is.
Approvals are session-specific. Confirm the position for the session you intend to join, not an earlier one.
If a claim about recognition cannot be traced to a named authority and a dated source, treat it as unconfirmed.
