Can MBBS, engineering or law be offered online or in distance mode in India?
Short answer
UGC’s Distance Education Bureau states that programmes in specified professional disciplines — including engineering, medical, law, architecture, pharmacy, nursing and others listed on the DEB FAQ — are prohibited in ODL and/or online mode. M.Phil and Ph.D. through ODL and online mode are also prohibited. Confirm the current list on deb.ugc.ac.in before you enrol.
What the DEB FAQ says
The Distance Education Bureau FAQ records that programmes in listed professional disciplines, including their allied domains, are prohibited in ODL and/or online mode. The list includes engineering, medical and allied health fields, pharmacy, nursing, dental, architecture, law, agriculture, horticulture, hotel management and others named on that page.
Research programmes such as M.Phil and Ph.D. are also prohibited in ODL and online mode, according to the same FAQ.
How to use this
A website calling a professional programme “UGC-approved online” is not enough. Open the DEB portal for the university, the programme and the session. If the programme is in a prohibited discipline, treat the offer as a warning, not a shortcut.

A common misconception
