Study Abroad Destination

Studying in Australia

Rules written into legislative instruments that are amended often.

Australia publishes more of its requirements in law than most destinations — financial capacity, English tests and graduate visa durations all sit in instruments that are amended periodically. That is useful, because you can read the actual rule; it also means anything you read second-hand goes out of date quickly.

Last checked against official sources: September 2026. Rules change every intake — always confirm on the official page before you act.

01Visa and entry

Visa and entry in Australia

Issuing authority

Department of Home Affairs. Applications are lodged through ImmiAccount.

How you apply

Apply online with a Confirmation of Enrolment from a CRICOS-registered course. Applications lodged from 23 March 2024 must also satisfy the Genuine Student requirement, which replaced the Genuine Temporary Entrant test.

Proof of funds

Financial capacity is fixed in a legislative instrument (LIN 19/198) that is amended from time to time. Read the current amount in the instrument or on the Home Affairs page rather than relying on a quoted figure.

Language requirement

Approved tests and score thresholds for the subclass 500 are set in a legislative instrument (LIN 25/090, dated 5 August 2025) and listed on the Home Affairs English-language page.

Health cover

Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) must be held for the whole visa period. It is a visa condition, not an optional extra.

02Fees

Fees in Australia

Tuition fees

There is no single national figure. Study Australia, the government's official portal, publishes an estimated total course cost for each listed course, and a separate living-costs page.

03Scholarships

Scholarships in Australia

Official scholarships

Australia Awards Scholarships, administered by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, is the main government programme and India is a participating country.

India is listed as a participating country, but eligibility, fields and dates are set country by country — check the participating-countries page for the current Indian terms.

04Admission

Admission in Australia

Who recognises institutions

A course must be listed on CRICOS, the Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students, before it can enrol international students.

Application route

Study Australia's course search for finding CRICOS-listed courses; applications then go to each institution or its admissions centre.

Entry requirements

Set per course by the provider, alongside the Genuine Student requirement assessed by Home Affairs. Professional fields such as engineering and nursing also require separate accreditation or registration to practise.

Not verified — confirm before you rely on it.

05After graduation

After graduation in Australia

Post-study work rights

Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485), Post-Higher Education Work stream. Durations were restructured by the Migration Amendment (Graduate Visas) Regulations 2024 and vary by qualification level — check the current stream page for your level.

Using the degree in India

For most academic subjects there is no separate Indian licensing step. Regulated professions — medicine, nursing, law, architecture, accountancy — are each governed by their own Indian regulator, and a foreign qualification is not automatically accepted. Confirm the position with that regulator before you enrol, not after you graduate.

06Watch Out

What families get caught out by.

Not warnings for their own sake — each of these changes the cost or the outcome.

  • The Genuine Student requirement is assessed on your stated intent, so a weak or copied statement of purpose can sink an otherwise strong application.

  • Graduate visa durations changed in 2024; anything written before that is unreliable.

  • Engineering, nursing and teaching need professional accreditation or registration on top of the degree.

07Courses

Courses for which Indians search Australia

Based on Indian search interest, not enrolment data, rankings or a NooPro recommendation.

  • Engineering

    Accreditation matters for engineering practice.

  • Law / LLM

    Practice rights require separate assessment.

  • MBA / Management

Moderate cost; strong regional employment focus.

  • MS / Master's

Strong regional demand; living costs vary sharply by city.

  • Nursing / Healthcare

Registration standards and bridging requirements apply.

  • PhD / Research

    Scholarship-linked admission is common.

  • Public Health / Finance

Established public-health and finance programme base.
