Studying in Georgia
Chosen almost entirely for English-medium medicine — which makes NMC rules the real decision.
Indian families consider Georgia overwhelmingly for MBBS. The question that decides it is not the university brochure but Indian law: whether the degree will let you sit the NMC screening examination and register to practise in India.
Visa and entry in Georgia
Student visa
Immigration visa, category D3 (study). It is valid for 90 days with multiple entries, during which you apply for a residence permit.
Issuing authority
Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia, through its missions. Indian applicants are routed through VFS Global visa application centres.
How you apply
Register on the Georgian e-consular portal and submit through the India centre. Immigration visa decisions are made within 30 calendar days of submission.
Proof of funds
No amount is published on the official Georgian pages we could verify. Use the India-specific checklist as the authoritative document list and confirm the current requirement with the mission.
Language requirement
Set by the university. Several Georgian medical faculties run English-medium MD programmes; language of instruction is also a condition under Indian NMC rules, so check both sides.
Health cover
The Georgian e-visa declaration requires valid travel insurance. No study-specific coverage figure is officially published.
Fees in Georgia
Tuition fees
No national figure is published. Universities publish their own — Tbilisi State University lists its English-medium MD programme at USD 8,000 a year (USD 4,000 per semester). Other universities differ and must be checked individually.
Scholarships in Georgia
Official scholarships
We could not verify any Georgian government scholarship open to Indian students. The Ministry of Education lists a state grant category for foreign citizens, but eligibility for Indian nationals is not confirmed.
Admission in Georgia
Who recognises institutions
Programmes state their own accreditation dates, but we could not confirm from an official page which Georgian authority issues that accreditation. Verify a specific university's accreditation status before you enrol.
Application route
No central portal. Applications go directly to each university.
Entry requirements
Set by each university. For medicine, the Indian NMC conditions on eligibility, course duration and clinical training matter more than the university's own minimum.
After graduation in Georgia
Post-study work rights
No dedicated post-study work permit was found on official Georgian sources. Working after graduation would require a separate permit under Georgia's general immigration rules.
Using the degree in India
A medical degree earned here does not by itself allow practice in India. Under the National Medical Commission (Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate) Regulations, 2021, an Indian citizen must hold an NMC eligibility certificate before enrolling and must clear the NMC screening examination (FMGE) to register in India. The regulations also set conditions on course duration, language of instruction and clinical training completed in the country of study.
What families get caught out by.
Not warnings for their own sake — each of these changes the cost or the outcome.
Get the NMC eligibility certificate before you enrol, not after. It is a precondition for sitting the screening examination.
Indian missions advise verifying degree recognition with the Association of Indian Universities before enrolling abroad.
Fees are set university by university, so a figure quoted for one institution says nothing about another.
