Studying in Russia
A long-established route for Indian medical students, with a government quota scheme.
Russia has taken Indian students for decades, largely into medicine, and runs a government scholarship quota through an official platform. Very little else is centrally published: fees, language requirements and consular documents all vary by university and mission.
Visa and entry in Russia
Student visa
Student visa, issued on the basis of an official invitation from the host university or the migration authority.
Issuing authority
Consular offices of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in India.
How you apply
Secure admission, receive the official invitation, then apply at the Russian consulate covering your region. Government-quota admissions run through the official Rossotrudnichestvo platform.
Proof of funds
We could not confirm a published financial requirement on an official Indian-facing consular page. Confirm the document list directly with the consulate handling your application.
Language requirement
Many programmes are taught in Russian and require a preparatory year first; some are English-medium. Confirm with the university, and for medicine check the Indian NMC conditions on language of instruction.
Health cover
Russian consulates require a medical certificate, including HIV testing, for long-stay applicants. We could not load the India consulate page to quote the exact list, so confirm it with the consulate.
Fees in Russia
Tuition fees
No Russian government body publishes a fee range. Each university sets its own tuition, and quota students are funded separately.
Scholarships in Russia
Official scholarships
The Russian Government Scholarship Quota is the official funded route, operated by Rossotrudnichestvo through the education-in-russia platform.

Post-study work rights
No dedicated post-study work route was found on official Russian sources. Anything you read describing one comes from commercial sites, not government pages.
Using the degree in India
A medical degree earned here does not by itself allow practice in India. Under the National Medical Commission (Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate) Regulations, 2021, an Indian citizen must hold an NMC eligibility certificate before enrolling and must clear the NMC screening examination (FMGE) to register in India. The regulations also set conditions on course duration, language of instruction and clinical training completed in the country of study.
What families get caught out by.
Not warnings for their own sake — each of these changes the cost or the outcome.
For medicine, the NMC conditions on course duration, language of instruction and clinical training decide whether the degree is usable in India.
A preparatory year adds a year of cost and time that is easy to leave out of a budget.
Check that the specific university, not just the country, is acceptable for your intended registration in India.
