Studying in Germany
Public universities charge no tuition fee, but admission and language are the barrier.
Germany is unusual: at public universities the cost problem is largely solved and the admission problem is not. Most programmes are competitive, many are taught in German, and your Indian qualification has to be translated into a German grade before an application is even considered.

Student visa
National visa (category D) for study purposes, for stays longer than 90 days.
Issuing authority
German missions abroad, under the Federal Foreign Office (Auswärtiges Amt). You need a university admission before you apply.
How you apply
Complete the VIDEX national visa form online, then book an appointment at the German mission handling your region.
Proof of funds
Funds are normally proved through a blocked account (Sperrkonto). The Federal Foreign Office sets the required annual amount and revises it, so we do not reproduce a figure here — read the current one on its blocked-account page before you budget.
Language requirement
Set by the university, not by the visa authority. German-taught programmes usually require DSH or TestDaF; English-taught programmes set their own test and score. There is no single national requirement.
Health cover
Health insurance is required for a long stay in Germany. Whether you fall under statutory or private cover, and what it costs, depends on your age and status — no single official figure is published.

Tuition fees
Public universities generally charge no tuition fee. Students pay a semester contribution set by each university — for winter semester 2026/27 that is €376.80 at Freie Universität Berlin, €357.80 at Universität Erfurt and €424.80 at Universität Marburg. Private universities charge their own tuition.

Official scholarships
DAAD, the German Academic Exchange Service, runs the main government-funded scholarship route and maintains an India-specific funding database.

Open to Indian applicants. Covers Bachelor's, Master's, PhD and research grants; each programme has its own eligibility and deadline.

Admission in Germany
Who recognises institutions
There is no single federal admissions regulator. Each university admits its own students; around 180 of them route international applications through uni-assist e.V.
Application route
uni-assist for most international applications, or the university's own portal. uni-assist states plainly that it does not work with commercial agencies.
Entry requirements
Requirements are set per programme. Many Indian applicants first need a preliminary review document (VPD) from uni-assist, which states how their Indian qualification converts to a German grade.
After graduation in Germany
Post-study work rights
German residence law provides a permit to look for work after graduating. We were not able to confirm the current duration against an official page, so confirm it on the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees site before you rely on it.
Using the degree in India
For most academic subjects there is no separate Indian licensing step. Regulated professions — medicine, nursing, law, architecture, accountancy — are each governed by their own Indian regulator, and a foreign qualification is not automatically accepted. Confirm the position with that regulator before you enrol, not after you graduate.
What families get caught out by.
Not warnings for their own sake — each of these changes the cost or the outcome.
The tuition saving disappears if you need a preparatory or language year before the degree starts.
A blocked account has to be funded in full before the visa is issued, so the money is needed earlier than families expect.
Many graduate-level jobs outside research expect working German, even when the degree was taught in English.
