Studying in United Kingdom
One-year master's degrees, with a defined post-study work route.
The UK's appeal is time: a taught master's usually runs a single year, so the total cost is compressed. The trade-off is the same compression — less time to find work, and a Graduate visa clock that starts as soon as you finish.
Visa and entry in United Kingdom
Student visa
Student visa, under the points-based system (Immigration Rules, Appendix Student).
Issuing authority
UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI), part of the Home Office.
How you apply
Apply online on GOV.UK after your university issues a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS). Some STEM courses also need an ATAS certificate.
Proof of funds
You must show one academic year's course fees as stated on your CAS, plus maintenance funds for living costs. The Home Office revises the maintenance amounts, so read the current figure on GOV.UK rather than relying on any number quoted elsewhere.
Language requirement
Your sponsoring university assesses and confirms your English ability when it issues the CAS. The score you need is set by the course, not by the Home Office.
Health cover
The Immigration Health Surcharge is paid with the visa application and gives access to the NHS. The rate is set by the Home Office and changes — check the current amount before budgeting.
Fees in United Kingdom
Tuition fees
No UK government body publishes a tuition range for international students. Fees are set by each university, and the figure that matters legally is the one printed on your CAS.
Scholarships in United Kingdom
Official scholarships
Chevening, funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, is the main UK government scholarship and covers a one-year master's.
Chevening Scholarships
Open to Indian applicants for a one-year master's. Work experience and leadership criteria apply; read the official eligibility page before assuming you qualify.

Admission in United Kingdom
Who recognises institutions
Providers in England are registered with the Office for Students, and any institution enrolling international students must hold a Home Office student sponsor licence.
Application route
UCAS for undergraduate admission. Postgraduate applications normally go directly to each university.
Entry requirements
Entry requirements are set course by course. The university, as your visa sponsor, is the body that decides whether your Indian qualification and English evidence are sufficient.
After graduation in United Kingdom
Post-study work rights
Graduate visa — permission to stay and work, or look for work, for at least 18 months after an eligible UK degree; longer for PhD graduates. No job offer or sponsor is needed.
Using the degree in India
For most academic subjects there is no separate Indian licensing step. Regulated professions — medicine, nursing, law, architecture, accountancy — are each governed by their own Indian regulator, and a foreign qualification is not automatically accepted. Confirm the position with that regulator before you enrol, not after you graduate.
What families get caught out by.
Not warnings for their own sake — each of these changes the cost or the outcome.
A one-year master's leaves very little time to job-hunt before the course ends.
The maintenance requirement and the health surcharge are both revised periodically — an old figure will under-budget your application.
Only degrees from licensed sponsors count towards a Graduate visa.
